Junior Wide Receiver Kheller Larson turns up field after a reception vs Forest Grove. Wilsonville’s next game is October 28th vs Putnam.

The 5A state playoffs are right around the corner, with just two games left on the schedule. So what teams could get in the way of the Wildcats making the playoffs, and what teams could they have to get through?

To guarantee a spot in the playoffs, the Wildcats need to finish top 4 in their division, which they share with, in order of conference rank, Putnam, Canby, 6A Forest Grove, 6A Southridge, Hillsboro, Hood River Valley, and Centennial. Wilsonville is in 2nd, but higher in the OSAA ranks than Putnam.

Wilsonville and Putnam face each other this week to determine the conference title, and potentially if a playoff rematch would be played in Randall Stadium. “We are feeling good. We are focused on our kids playing well on both sides of the ball. If we take care of the little things the outcome will take care of itself,” stated Wilsonville Athletic Director Josh Davis.

Wilsonville’s defense was shaky to start the year, allowing 37.7 points per game, granted it was against stiff competition. However, the last 4 games they are only allowing 5 points per game, and going into the Putnam game have not allowed a single point since October 7th. “Our D line with Jonny, Mason, Gavin, and Ryder are eating everything up  and making it easier for the linebackers to fill gaps and make tackles,” said senior Dylan Nance.

Meanwhile, the Wildcat offense has been consistently dominant throughout the season. The Wildcats are averaging 34 points per game on offense, and have only been held to 20 points or less once this season. “The feeling in the locker room  is definitely ecstatic and we are excited to get at it during the playoffs. I think this team can do something special but we have to take it one game at a time,” said Nance.

Some, but not all teams that Wilsonville might have to go through for the title are Putnam, Summit, and Thurston. “We are always looking at Thurston, a 5A power the past few years and of course Summit the new team in 5A. We have played both these teams already and have an idea about them, but one game at a time,” said Davis.

Summit is currently first in the OSAA rankings and have won 8 straight games after a week 1 loss to 6A Tualatin. Summit’s offense has scored 28 points or more every game since, and no game has finished within one possession since.

Thurston is second in the OSAA rankings, and after an 0-2 start have won 6 straight. Similar to Wilsonville, their defense has improved after a slow start, and in their last game bullied Willamette, 54-0.

Wilsonville plays Putnam October 28th at 7:00 PM to determine the division. The first round of state playoffs will be played November 4th and 5th.
