Berkley Reents gets ready to hit a pitch in a 2-0 victory over Hillsboro. Reents helped lead a Wilsonville offense that mustered just enough offense in the 6th.

As we head into the second week of April the rain continues to come down at Wilsonville High School, affecting baseball games. With Wilsonville heading into league play for the 2023 season they have a real chance to turn their season around.

Wilsonville started the season 1-5-1 playing out of league teams such as West Albany, Sprague, and Central Catholic. Wilsonville struggled immensely at the plate, scoring a combined 7 runs in those games that saw Wilsonville fall short each time. Wilsonville also got some action at the end of March in Arizona playing mostly Arizona teams and one Colorado team in a tournament Wilsonville finished with a record of 1-2-1.

After coming back from Arizona Wilsonville found some offense, defeating Bend 8-3 and Grants Pass 5-1, with both of those matchups being on the road for Wilsonville. With a couple wins under their belt Wilsonville took on Hillsboro in their first league match of the season. Berkley Reents spoke on the winning streak: “with three wins in a row now we are gaining more confidence everyday as we get into league play, especially on the offensive side.”

Both offenses were sluggish, going scoreless, until Wilsonville finally got on the board in the bottom of the 6th, scoring the only two runs of the game. However, this is all Luke Haener would need as he hurled a complete game shut out in just 77 pitches to give Wilsonville its first league win.

Luke Haener had this to say about his gem of an outing after the game: “It felt really good to go out there and throw strikes knowing I had a good defense behind me backing me up, it felt good getting the first league win of the year and we want to keep that rolling.”

With Wilsonville taking the first game of the three game series, the Wildcats look to win the series on Thursday the 13th at Hillsboro. With their first win against the Spartans Wilsonville now rides a 3 game winning streak. For Hillsboro they fall to 5-6 and look to tie the series on Thursday.
