The first day of school has always been considered daunting for new coming and returning students, as they reestablish school normalities and rituals, while also adjusting to new classes.

Not only do students utilize the first day of school to exercise old habits, but some also recognize an opportunity to sport their attire to begin the year in style. The first day of school outfits can be stressful if planned with strong attentiveness, but students are here to share why they revel in the pursuit of finding the perfect outfit.

Asa Gessler, entering his sophomore year, finds it particularly pressuring to assemble an outfit for the first day of school because it can be used as a “first impression”. Gessler hopes to achieve the impression that “[he has] good style.”

Makenzie Small, now a junior at WVHS, has a similar approach to Gessler and strives to look her best on the first day. Although some students have distinctive style arrangements, Small typically “bandwagon[s] a lot when it comes to clothes,” and she anticipates students will be wearing similar items of clothing to her.

Audrey Buck, an incoming junior, tends to gravitate towards clothing that she knows will receive positive reactions from her fellow classmates. She plans to wear “a shirt or baby tee and jeans,” because she’s confident it will “vibe well for people” that may be in her classes.

Unlike Gessler, Small, and Buck, Sujan Shadrak, an incoming junior, does his best to avoid the emphasis on clothing on the first day of school and channels his typical fashion. Shadrak expressed his intention of opting out of the first day of school attire saying he likes to “wear what [he] normally wear[s] on a daily basis cause [he] like[s] being myself.”

While some of WVHS’ students channel their typical ensemble, the first day of school allows others to endeavor in new clothing and create a fashionable impression amongst their peers.
