Gallery hopping with AP and advanced artists

AP and Advanced Art and Sculpture students take a field trip to downtown Portland

On September 14th, Advanced and AP Art, as well as Advanced and AP Sculpture students, took a field trip to the Pearl District in downtown Portland.

This field trip was for students to tour art galleries around the Pearl to gain inspiration for their art pieces and to study techniques. Students went to a used art store called I’ve Been Framed to buy art supplies. Next, they visited Blackfish Gallery, Elizabeth Leach Gallery, Upfro Gallery, Gallery 114, and Froelick Gallery. Students also stopped for lunch part way through the trip.

One of the reasons for this field trip was so that students could have material to write about professional artist and their art pieces, as well as be able to write an artist evaluation. Students are to use a professional artists work to look at different elements of design, such as line or color.

Senior and Arts and Entertainment Editor Isaac Boger had this to say, “my favorite gallery we visited was Gallery 114 because this artist had very vibrant and interesting art. They were not  a minimalist artist, which can be hard art to appreciate.” At Gallery 114, the artists whose art was being displayed, Don Bailey and Curtis Settino, were at the gallery to greet students! This allowed students to have one on one questions with the artist who created the works hanging in the gallery.
