A look at 2020 presidential candidates

As the presidential race gets underway, we get a closer look at the current candidates up for the job

Many people don’t realize it, but the 2020 presidential race is already underway. Although no one is the so-called frontrunner this early, candidates are starting to get their name to the public so people will establish some name recognition later on.

As of today’s date (2/7/19) there is 635 days until the November 3rd election date in 2020 but, it’s never too early to start familiarizing yourself with the current candidates.

Donald Trump

 

  • Current POTUS (President of the United States)
  • Leader of the Republican Party
  • Tough on Immigration, believes in deportation of illegal immigrants no matter how long they’ve been in the country
  • Same- Sex marriage is a state issue
  • Cut business tax rate from 35% to 21% in 2018
  • Wants to end the opioid crisis in the United States
  • Bigger tariffs for China

Kamala Harris, California Senator

 

 

  • Against current border security issues, like separating families
  • Wants to provide middle-class with tax credits
  • Defeated two-term incumbent in Oakland to become the first District Attorney that is of color or female.
  • Wants a bigger voice for women in politics
  • Supports Dreamers (Children who were brought to the U.S illegally

Tulsi Gabbard, Hawaii representative

 

  • Main focuses are health care, justice system reform, and climate change
  • She’s a veteran who fought in the Iraq war
  • Stands with Saudi Arabia
  • First person of Hindu faith to be elected to congress
  • Supports raising income taxes
  • Pro-choice
  • Former Klu Klux Klan grand wizard recently endorsed Gabbard be he believes, “she will put America first”. Gabbard has denounced his support for her campaign.

 

Cory Booker ,New Jersey Senator, Democrat

 

  • Stanford graduate and Rhodes Scholar
  • For justice system reform
  • Very progressive stance on healthcare, wants basic, universal healthcare
  • Pro-Green New Deal
  • Wants to create a federal job guarantee amid the last government shutdown
  • Wants refundable housing credit system for those who struggle to pay rent
  • Improve conditions for those affected by the war on drugs.

John Delaney, former Maryland representative

 

  • Centrist, who has less polarizing views of both Democratic and Republican parties
  • Wants to reunify parties so everyone will be more bipartisan
  • Universal health care
  • Immigrant support
  • Slogan: Focus on the Future

Julian Castro, former Urban Housing and Development Secretary

 

  • Supports Medicare-for-all system
  • Wants to return to Paris climate agreement that President Trump left in 2017
  • Higher minimum wages
  • Create affordable housing options for all
  • Says “no” to subsidizing big oil companies
  • Wants to implement universal Pre-K for all children in the U.S
