2019 Oscar predictions

This upcoming Sunday, the annual Oscars are being presented in Los Angeles. The 91st Academy Awards will be a star-studded event worthy of everyone’s attention because you never know what kind of flub or mishap will happen this year. However, one thing I always love about the soon-to-be obsolete event is predicting, mostly inaccurately, winners of ‘important’ awards. By ’important’, I mean easy to judge by the public or the everyday viewer. I could watch all of the movies and say “wow, what great sound mixing Bohemian Rhapsody had, that deserves an oscar” but, in reality, I have no skills to base it on. So here are my perfectly amatuer predictions–enjoy!

Best Picture:

  • Roma: Up for 9 other nominations from the Academy, this is a strong contender, however, my vote does not go to this spectacular film.
  • The Favourite: Winner Also up for 9 other nominations, The Favourite, has all around, great screenplay, cinematography, and strong female leads oozing out of this masterpiece.
  • Vice: One thing I love about the power of film is the feeling of getting out of a showing and being satisfied with the performance and I continue to think about it for the rest of the day, like it follows me around. However, when I saw Vice, I left wanting to forget it. Christian Bale was great at portraying Dick Cheney, but I just felt gross after watching it.
  • Bohemian Rhapsody: Amazing! A must-see, but I don’t think they’ll give Best Picture to it because they normally don’t choose these types of films.
  • Green Book: I haven’t seen it so I don’t want to judge it.
  • BlacKkKlansman: A little too controversial for the Academy, sorry 🙁 I loved the film though, very good sense of humor and it’s crazy that it was a true story.
  • A Star Is Born: My step-dad said the original version of the film was better with Barbara Streisand so I’m taking his word on it. I cried at the end, so don’t think you shouldn’t go out and see it.
  • Black Panther: Dude, it’s an action movie so that’s the only thing why I think it won’t be chosen.

Best Actor

  • Christian Bale, Vice : Winner
  • Bradley Cooper, A Star Is Born: Subpar performance, 7/10
  • William Dafoe, At Eternity’s Gate: Didn’t see it
  • Rami Malek, Bohemian Rhapsody Stunning performance 9/10
  • Viggo Mortensen, Green Book Didn’t see it, but my mom loves Viggo, we named our dog after him, he might win.

Best Actress

  • Yalitza Aparicio, Roma Didn’t see, but I really want to after all, it’s on Netflix
  • Glenn Close, The Wife: Winner She won the Golden Globe for Best Actress, and the awards are pretty consistent for her on this film
  • Lady Gaga, A Star Is Born Ugh, I love her. Personally, I would give it to her but I don’t think the Academy judges based on her newest album, Joanne.
  • Melissa McCarthy, Can You Ever Forgive Me? I heard this movie was bad :/
  • Olivia Colman, The Favourite I’m sure she deserves it but Glenn Close takes the cake.

Best Supporting Actor

  • Mahershala Ali, Green Book Uhh didn’t see it, my bad.
  • Adam Driver, BlacKkKlansman  I’ve loved Adam Driver ever since he played Kylo Ren, plus he was really funny in this movie so he’s my personal favorite. The Academy should take my vote into consideration *
  • Sam Elliott, A Star Is Born Not a major enough character to get award, too minor
  • Richard E. Grant, Can You Ever Forgive Me? I heard the movie was bad
  • Sam Rockwell, Vice Rockwell was very good as President Bush but I believe Adam Driver should get this award.

Best Supporting Actress

  • Amy Adams: Vice 8/10 performance
  • Marina de Tavira: Roma Haven’t seen the film
  • Regina King: If Beale Street Could Talk I heard this movie is very good, in particular, Regina King. Don’t sleep on this film
  • Emma Stone: The Favourite Very likely possibility but I didn’t hear she was a standout
  • Rachel Weisz: The Favourite Very likely possibility but I didn’t hear she was a standout

Best Director

  • Alfonso Cuaron: Roma  It’s in black and white, whoever does that wins an Oscar
  • Yorgos Lanthimos: The Favourite Nope
  • Spike Lee: BlacKkKlansman Nope
  • Adam McKay: Vice Nope
  • Pawel Pawlikowski: Cold War Nope
