WHS OHSET team dominates at their first competition

Over the weekend Wilsonville’s OHSET team took on their first competition in McMinnville and did exceptionally well. Because this is a sport that not many people can watch, it can be difficult to understand all the different events these girls compete in. Last year, the team placed 12th out of 22 teams for large category. The team consisted of many seniors last year with big shoes to fill.  Sydnie Jersey, Brooklyn James, and Megan Clancy, seniors of this years OHSET team, have taken the responsibility of been outstanding leaders and contributors for this season.

This year the team has grown to 21 girls and has 3 amazing seniors. This weekend, Sydnie Jersey, Brooklyn James, Kendall Shanklin, and Carly Shanklin won first place in team versatility. Two of the three seniors, Sydnie Jersey and Brooklyn James did excellent! Sydnie Jersey ended up taking home first place in barrels, poles, and steer daubing. Brooklyn James competed in several events and took home many placements. She placed first in western horsemanship. The drill team placed third against many schools. In addition,  Wilsonville B team placed first in team penning as well.

Kathryn Compton, sophomore on the team, ended up taking a fall from a rare incident with her horse. Kathryn blacked out during the episode and ended up injuring her hand. The team hopes to have her back within their next couple competitions to compete in her individual events and team events.

Their next competition is on March 14th in McMinnville. Wilsonville is in the Tri-River Valley District and will compete against schools from Lake Oswego High School to Oregon City High School. You can stay updated with our Wilsonville OHSET team on the TRV OHSET website.
