Wilsonville Cross Country thoroughly swept their district meet, with girls’ and boys’ varsity bringing home first place as well as Wilsonville’s JV runners not only winning their races but coming out with a perfect score.

The meet itself took place at Blue Lake Park, where Wilsonville had previously run during the NWOC Preview and Nike Portland Invite.

The wind was strong as the first gun went off, signaling the start of the varsity girls’ race. “It was blowing so hard my eyes teared up, and then flew from my face,” explained Sarah Somerscales.

Even with the harsh wind and chill temperature, Sydney Burns got a personal record of 19:27, which is over a minute faster than her previous time running the course.

On the boys’ side of things, Jacob McClelland came in first for Wilsonville and fourth in his race. Wilsonville had five runners place in the top ten, careening them into a sure first place victory. Ben Sheirbon had his fastest time of the season with a 17:06; he’s had some injury problems this year but is looking to be back to full speed, just in time for the State meet.

Both JV races came out with a perfect score of 15, meaning in either race they had the first five runners to cross the finish line.

With the State race less than two weeks away, Wilsonville is taking their District win in stride and setting their sights on success for their final meet of the season.
