Many Wilsonville athletes would participate in a fall tennis season.

The cancellation of spring sports left many athletes lost for the past months. Oregon laws and social distancing has put a halt to games, practices, matches, and meets. Many tennis players found themselves wondering if they could still play because a net separates opponents. The talk about a warm September has been sparking hope in many Wilsonville High School tennis players that they could have the chance to play this fall.

Sherwood High School is currently running many spring sports in a shortened fall season. To take precautions against COVID-19 athletes participate in symptom screenings, temperature checks, equipment sanitation, and wearing masks when social distancing cannot be implemented. For sports such as lacrosse, many athletes must wear masks while competing as they come in close contact with other students. Tennis players are not always required to wear masks during their matches because they can maintain a six foot distance from other players.

Senior Lily Wright has been playing tennis for Wilsonville since she was a freshman. “…I would love to play a fall season,” Wright exclaimed. She is holding out hope for a fall season; however, “… you never know what will happen”.

Senior Caleb Wilde has been playing tennis his whole life. He would participate in a fall season if it was available to Wilsonville students. “If any sport should be played, it should be tennis… I think there’s a chance,” Wilde explained.

Wilsonville tennis players continue to hope for a chance to play, even if it remains non-competitive. Stay positive, Wildcats!
