Humans of Wilsonville High School
Elizabeth Harris, Staff Writer
In 2010, Brandon Stanton, a photographer, started a blog with interviews and photographs from the streets of New York City. As time went on it gained a large following and influence. Just like the streets of New York City, our unique city of Wilsonville has a diverse array of personalities and people alike. Interviewed below are some of our Wilsonville High School students each talking about different subjects such as sports, life stories, passions, opinions and other areas of interest.

"Sports are really important, I don’t think that everyone has to play a sport obviously but I think that during the Covid-19 lockdown when sports weren’t an option, it made me realize how important sports are and how much of an escape they are. It's a reset every day in my life. After school, it’s really good for me to go to practice and not have to think about school. Especially during Covid...

"I was thinking about how we could have more of a diversity of government-based classes where you would have debates and could join student council or something that’s more involved in the school environment. This type of class would allow you to be more active within the school and have a say and a voice to integrate yourself and your peers. Everyone would have a voice. There could be events ...

"In October I had my first play of this year called Once Upon a Mattress. It was really fun and I regret not getting into the theater sooner. Now in my second theater production, I play Robin Starveling. My favorite part of theater is making friends with the other cast members and one thing I didn’t expect to like was Choreography, which I was regretting having to learn. It ended up being one of my fa...

"I got into cross country because my sister did and she recommended it to me. I started this summer with the cross country team. At first, I didn't know anyone on the team they were all upperclassmen. But as ran every single day, I met a bunch of new people. I met new friends and it was really fun both running and talking with people during cross country. We did pretty well as a team at state and it ...

"I like to code, build, and do all kinds of things that have to do with technology. It seems to come easy to me, I really don’t know why it does but I find it fun to just make whatever I want to. If anyone ever needs help with technology I know a lot about it and I help them. I take robotics and I just joined robotics this year but I’ve also done graphic arts for one or two years. Sometimes dur...

"I have done Jazz Band, Symphonic Band, and Pit Orchestra. The one thing in common with all these bands is the community of people. I don’t think I’ve met more people in any other way than through band. It’s always a big group of people that just love the same things, so already you have something in common with a ton of different people. Everybody’s really passionate about what they do because band...

"Something I’m really passionate about is lacrosse, I’ve been playing since second grade and I remember I had to play boys lacrosse in 4th grade and in the other Canby schools that I attended. When I got older it was time for me to switch over to girls lacrosse so I came to Wilsonville there is a girls program here. I made a bunch of friends here in Wilsonville and I still play lacrosse. I think ...

"Marxism is this political and economic way of thought. It essentially puts the power in the hands of the people as opposed to a ruling class. It sees the society we live in now as being classes of people who “have” and people “who don’t have”. It’s like the English terms that teachers use such as proletarian and bourgeois; The ruling class and the working class. Marxism lets the power be give...

"One of my major hobbies is in the theater and I’ve noticed that here at Wilsonville High School we have a wonderful theater program. We put a lot of work into our shows and I was in Once Upon a Mattress, a wonderful musical that is very cartoony and fun. I played a knight within the ensemble. A lot of time and effort went into that show and I’m really glad that we did sell out all of the seat...

"Since I was really little my whole family has been into baseball and softball. My dad played baseball in college so when my sister and I were five we started talking about softball and we started playing t-ball. I was off and on as I got a little older because I was a gymnast at the time but my sister continued playing it all the time. When I got into high school I started playing it more because...

"I started music, choir, and everything when I was in second grade and then I had a bunch of wonderful music teachers who helped build my passion. I still participate in musicals and I’m in a choir as well as Soul’d out. This year has been particularly interesting because of masks since choirs are big groups of people. As we perform with the band and other people we try to balance how to keep e...

"I’m a junior at Wilsonville High School. During Covid it was a little bit hard online wasn’t the best for me personally. I’m a very visual person so I like to be in the classroom to collaborate and talk with people. I ended up transferring to a military school down in Bend, Oregon. It was good but very challenging because they put you in a perspective of the outside inside. They treat you just lik...

"I play volleyball and I’ve been playing since I was nine years old. I didn't play on a competitive team until I was in sixth grade. When I was little I used to do gymnastics. But I ended up having to choose between gymnastics and volleyball because I was getting too tall for gymnastics. My parents are also tall so I have tall genes and then my joints started hurting. My coach told me I could push t...

"I’ve been gaming for a long time. I don't remember the first game that I played, I think it might have been on the original Xbox or the Wii. I remember playing with my brother or my dad if I was playing a multiplayer game. I did get into PC gaming later on through my dad's steam account. I do remember this one game me and my brother used to play a lot, it was called Garry's Mod, which is a sandbox...

"I really like theatre because it has helped me to get over my stage fright and a lot of other anxieties. I know a lot of people that I’m friends with now I met through theater my freshman year when I joined Cinderella. I’m thinking of running for the drama council and I think that’s gonna be fun. We do a lot of things like regionals. We get to go to another school and compete with a bunch of...

"I’ve been doing cheer since August before football games started up. I've been dancing and prepping for a while. I've been dancing since I was three and I was in a performing company for a little while but it's mostly been a lot of different areas in dance and it all helped with cheer. But I've only started cheer this year. I’m definitely planning on doing cheer for the full four years of high...

"I work at the 4-H Center which helps youth develop many different skills. As high school students, we work with younger kids during the camps. We usually work as counselors or CITs. I've been a part of this program for a while as a camper, counselor, and CIT for around 6 years or 7 years. As a camper every day you have an all-camper activity like everyone would go out and do something fun. I would...

"The main thing that was different between Missouri and here is that we start in the middle of august, whereas here we start in September. I found that was pretty different. Here at this school students are required to take geometry my school was different because whatever math class you were in you just kept continuing. The funniest thing is they put me in trigonometry but I've never taken geometry....

"So I got started in band in 6th grade as a percussionist and it got boring after a year and a half. Then one day I walked in with my dad's trumpet because he played for a while and I never even told the band teacher I just came in, sat down, and played what the kid next to me was playing. In 8th grade, I auditioned for symphonic band and there was this one kid that everyone thought so so much better...
