Wilsonville overcomes first half struggles with win over Hillsboro
Wilsonville looks to defend their home court against league opponent Hillsboro. Defeats them 46-37.
Tonight the Wilsonville Wildcats hosted the Hillsboro Spartans in a very important league match up for the Wildcats. The Cats started off the game horrendously but fought back to secure a 9 point victory over the Spartans.
Right out of the gate the Wildcats lacked energy and weren’t ready to play. The Spartans jumped out to an early 9-0 lead forcing the Wildcats to call timeout. Although the cats were able to close the gap and only trailed by 2 going into halftime, the first half remained awful for the cats. They turned the ball over a whopping 16 times which ultimately led them to their 2 point deficit going into half time.
Coming out of the locker room the Cats seemed to have new life and were ready to play. They immediately went on a 13-0 run with Hillsboro scoring 6 to end the quarter. Wilsonville now led 32-27. When asked what adjustments were made at halftime to bring to bring new life to the Cats, junior, Emily Scanlan responded by saying “Our team as a whole realized that we had to pick up our energy on defense. Offensively, we needed to attack the middle and be strong with the ball to prevent turning it over.” Continuing into the 4th quarter, the Spartans kept their fight alive and cut the Cats lead down to two. But the Wildcats held strong and pulled away for a 9 point victory over the Spartans.
The Wildcats are now a very solid 16-3 and hold firm onto second place in the league. The Spartans drop to 9-10 and are still battling with Milwaukie for that 3rd place spot in league.
You can catch the Wildcats in action next being hosted by the Sandy Pioneers in a
double header with the boys team on Tuesday the 6th.
