Wilsonville shuts down Churchill 57-50 in down-to-the-wire drama
The 1-0 Churchill Lancers visited Randall Stadium under the lights to face off against the 1-0 Wilsonville Wildcats.
It was a battle all game long and each team had their fair share of momentum. It was back and forth all game but the Cats started down 14-0 and had to fight their way back. With not much defense, both offenses had impressive nights.
After four hours of contesting for supremacy, the Lancers scored with 48 seconds and converted the two-point conversion to put the Lancers up 50-49 late.
Out came Nathan Overholt and the Wildcats prolific passing attack. Overholt lead the Wildcats on an eight-play; 71-yard scoring drive to put them up 55-50.
With 8 seconds left the Cats were in scoring position. The play was a rub route intended for Sam Westing, but the ball got popped into the air and Jonah Gomez came down with it.
Coach Guenther decided to go for two to put the Cats up by seven. They went deep in the playbook and pulled out a trick play with former Quarterback now slot receiver Grant Irby. Overholt handed the ball to Irby who ran outside and threw it all the way across the field to a wide-open Nathan Overholt to put the Cats up seven with seconds remaining.
It was a great night for the Cats and for Nathan Overholt who elapsed 460 yards passing along with 6 touchdowns.
