When we think of non-sanctioned OSAA sports, some popular names such as lacrosse, snowboarding, and various other sports-turned clubs may come to mind. But new this year to Wilsonville’s lineup is the fishing club.
Fishing Club was founded by junior Simon Bonfiglio, and his intentions towards a starting point for people to enter the world of fishing.
The idea started last summer when Bonfiglio and his friend, Brady Grant, vowed to get outdoors more and take advantage of the beautiful, local lake. Towards the end of the summer, Bonfigilo and Grant wanted to carry it on into the school year. They thought, “What better way than to start a club?”
“We were bummed because, for a little while, we thought school would take away our fishing time. Then we thought about bringing it into the school,” Bonfiglio shared. Bringing fishing to Wilsonville is exactly what they did.
But what makes a fishing club special? “It’s something anyone can do,” said Bonfiglio. “You don’t need to be a super-talented person to fish.” Bonfigilo’s efforts to create an open and inclusive learning space have worked out just as well as he hoped.
Junior, Milan De La Cruz, claims not to have much fishing experience but is excited to learn from others in the club. “I am looking to accomplish some cool catches and learn new things; fishing isn’t something I’m completely familiar with, but I’m excited to learn,” she concludes.
To cap off the great fishing club initiation, Bonfiglio and Grant introduced the great sport of fishing to people who would ordinarily not have a passing thought about it. Bonfigilo has big things planned and can’t wait to reach more people in the coming years.
As for the rest of this year, the fishing club is in a great spot and ecstatic to continue to foster a great community of people ready to learn about the sport of fishing. Feel free to join for any of the upcoming excursions!
