“My name is Kate Coreson and I am the teacher/librarian here at Wilsonville. I curate the library collection, so I’m in charge of purchasing books and getting rid of books. I also teach and help create lessons around digital citizenship research, inquiry, and library skills. So I can go into the classroom and help a group of students who are doing a research project. Also I’ve done some lesson planning for life classes, and digital citizenship lessons for life classes. And we also have the make their space that I put together last year … so I wear a lot of hats.
And then I just try to keep the library as a welcoming learning commons for people.
I want every student to feel welcome in the library, not just students who read. So if you are not a big reader, I still want you to feel like the library is a space where you can come and there will be something for you here. I want students to feel like I am a safe person to talk to, to ask for book recommendations from, that kind of thing, and I want it to be a space where people just feel comfortable existing in school.
And I have a creative chaos ring, so being able to consume and create art is kind of my whole deal, it always has been since I was really little. I think it makes me a more open-minded person, and I think that it gives me the opportunity to understand more kinds of people on different levels and that helps me just like in the world, but also in my job because I work with so many different kinds of people and to make sure that I have materials for all those people, so I think they kind of connect to each other.
Outside of being a librarian, I, of course, have a lot of artsy stuff that I’m into. I just make sure that I am always doing something that makes me happy. So, like, right now, I just signed up for a tap dance class because I enjoy dancing. And so I found a tap dance class and I just signed up for it and made sure that I’m doing it because I want to make sure that I’m always doing something that brings me joy. I also really like food. I like my friends, I have a lot of friends – I’m very social. I love to travel, but I also love to like curl up under a blanket and watch TV – binge watch television. I love films and theater.
And reading, of course.”
