Plunk plunk plunk plunk! The first noises heard in the band room are that of a string bass. Next comes brass, then saxes and drums, then piano and vibes. The early morning fades away as each musician arrives and fills the room with noise. Each instrument, a color painting sound.
Every musician knows the part they play in the ensemble, each voice unique and essential. Each one arrives and gets to work, warming up instruments, practicing licks, and setting up the room. Like clockwork it happens, every day.
Jazz band is made up of musicians from music groups at Wilsonville High School, including members of band, orchestra, and choir. Led by Chad Davies, these musicians come together early every morning before school to make music. “Jazz is an escape from stress and reality,” says sophomore percussionist Caitlyn Aery.
While jazz band gives musicians an escape from reality, it also lets them escape from the kind of music they’re used to. Jazz is very different from music played in most other classes. Not only is it a specific combination of instruments, but it also uses different techniques and style.
Switching from classical music to jazz music can be very difficult, and it requires a lot of practice and research. Members of jazz band frequently listen to a wide range of jazz artists to develop their style, as well as practicing improvisation, one of the hallmarks of jazz.
Pianist senior, James Lee says, “Jazz band has some of the most dedicated musicians in the school. It’s an honor to be amongst hard-working musicians who have the passion to wake up early, learn difficult rep, and express themselves openly through their improv.”
Through hard work and a whole lot of passion, jazz music comes alive. More than just a song, every tune is a conversation and a story. As the dedicated musicians of the Wilsonville High School Jazz Band hone their craft, they build a legacy that keeps this beautiful genre alive.
