“This is my 10th year of teaching, and before coming to Wilsonville High School, I taught at Rosemont Ridge Middle School in West Linn.
I think I’ve grown as a teacher since I’ve been at Wilsonville with just my colleagues that I’ve been able to collaborate with. They’ve made me a better teacher. Also, it’s been kind of nice to teach 8th grade before this, and I’ve grown because I’ve seen what the kids need when they enter high school. So, I feel like that’s helped me grow as a teacher too to help kids feel better prepared for high school.
Before this year, I would have said ninth graders are my favorite to teach because I like teaching high school better than middle school, but now that I have a group of juniors for life class, I love teaching juniors, and I’d love to teach juniors for language arts too.
First and foremost, I just want my students to feel welcome when they come to my classroom that they have a place where they can feel welcomed and safe. And then additionally, even if my students don’t leave my room loving reading and writing, I hope that they can leave the year feeling like they got better at reading and writing and that they’re stronger students. But most of all, I just hope that they feel like I’m a person that they can come to.
Something I think my students would be surprised to know about me is I’m actually really into, like, spooky, creepy things, which does not match my aesthetic of my classroom, which is very pink and flowers and girly things. But I really like spooky, scary, like, horror type movies.”
