Going back last summer, on the date July 2nd, 2025, Oregon’s governor Tina Kotek passed the “no phone law” through K-12 schools to prohibit the use of cell phones during school hours.
However, maybe a no-phone policy can actually create a better learning environment and improve the overall school experience.
There are some benefits of the no-phone policy, but a major one is increased focus. When students don’t have their phones out, they would obviously pay more attention to the teacher and class activities. Whether it’s Instagram follow requests, Snapchat notifications, or texts, all of it can make it harder to concentrate. Without these distractions, students can better concentrate and understand lessons.
Another advantage is better social interaction. Technically, when phones are put away, students talk more to each other. This helps build more relationships and improve communication skills.
A no-phone policy can also lead to improved mental health. Constant phone use can potentially cause stress along with anxiety, especially with social media pressure. Taking a break during school hours gives students time to focus on themselves and their goals without comparing their lives to others online.
Lastly, a no-phone policy environment promotes responsibility and respect. Students learn when and where it’s appropriate to use technology. This helps them prepare for future experiences, like meetings, jobs, etc.
