Wilsonville’s dance team is a beautiful gem that shines so brightly, but can at times be hidden from people’s spectrum due to all the attention that more common sports, like basketball, football, or soccer, absorb. While students give other sports all the spotlight, it can lead to others not getting the appreciation they deserve.
The girls on the dance team take time and effort day after day at practice to memorize a multitude of different routines, be in sync with one another, and put on a spectacular performance on the day a competition comes. They put their best foot forward at these competitions to show off their hard work. To be the reflection of our school.
Last weekend, on the 13th of December, Wilsonville’s Dance team competed in the Clackamas Dance competition and put on a great show. After their recent performance at the Rex Putnam Holiday Festival competition on December 6th they had to add new choreo and skills to their routines in a week till they had to perfect it to compete it on December 13th.
“We were a little more nervous than the last competition since this was the first time the judges were going to see our routine all the way through,” explains Fabi Monge, a senior and captain on the team.
Although they had to polish and refine the new additions that were made to their routine in a limited amount of time, they did not shrivel at the challenge. They showed up determined to put their best work in and it paid off significantly. The team got second place in not one but both of their dances. “It was hard but at the end it showed all our hard work compared to our last one” says Fabi.
This year, many new girls joined the team, which has made each achievement even more meaningful. “Learning new tricks and stuff can be really scary and daunting so we try to help them with techniques and sympathize for them how we were once just like them too,” explains Myla Norwood, who’s been on the dance team for 3 years now.
Joining a new competitive team can be nerve-racking, but these girls have been welcomed and given the best support from their teammates to become the best dancers they can be. “I felt really proud of the newbies!” shares Myla. With more competitions ahead, there is no limit to the amount of success this team can bring to Wilsonville High School.
