You Want To Know How I Got These Scars?

Teaching Language Arts, just like Laura West does. Many teachers struggle with the insanity of their students, but West leans into it by putting up multiple pictures of the most insane character in fiction, The Joker, or “Jonkler” as the Reddit community for the Batman: Arkham games calls him, having been driven to madness over the lack of new content in the series.

Running trophies in Mr. Barkley's room
Running in the 2000s

Math teacher David Barkley makes it clear that his real passion is cross-country running, with him having several old jerseys as well as trophies dating back to 2001 on top of his cabinets. Barkley also lines his room with running-related memorabilia as well as the mathematical stuff you would expect.

…Belize, Nicaragua, Bermuda…

Spanish teacher Christian Canales displays his country of birth in the classroom, with a soccer ball as an added effect thanks to the sport’s popularity in Costa Rica, whose national team regularly reaches the World Cup, (albeit not the upcoming one). Meanwhile, Canales still shows support for the country that allows him to be a teacher, with the omnipresent American flag and the banner for the San Francisco Giants, one of the most storied teams in the all-American sport of baseball.

The Bird is the Word

When you think of Biology teacher Jason Milham, you also think of wrestling, as he is the longtime coach. However, when you think of biology at this school, which every freshman here takes, you often think of juncos, a population of which is vital for understanding evolution of animals in urban environments. Thus, Wilsonville students have an understanding of something that most people do not, an inside joke to everyone at this school.

Unified In Differences

While Room 98 is often seen as the place where our special education students are sent to avoid distracting us, it is really a room full of important community and education. On a wall is a bulletin board of a common experience many special education students have here, being part of Special Olympics Unified Sports, forming connections between them and learning how to be part of a team.

You Can Rush Art

Business teacher Fritz Hummelt does not have a classroom of his own, having to make do with a portion of the cafeteria. Despite the limited suitability for education and creative freedom, Hummelt still likes to put up students’ illustrations for concepts in his class, here students drew themselves at their current age, 29, (his claimed age) and 65 to help understand how savings accounts work.

Mr. Eby's books
Well-Read and Well-Worn

History teacher Arden Eby has a lot of books in his classroom, with expansive titles such as “The Rise of Western Civilization.” Eby says that his books were acquired in college, back when students needed to read a lot more than today, as he’s been teaching in West-Linn Wilsonville School District since 1990, and a Wildcat since 2000.

It’s Just a Regular Classroom…Oh my goodness!

Math teacher Anna Raschko has plenty of decorations related to her subject, but something interesting is this large poster of Squidward from SpongeBob SquarePants. She says she only put it up because she thought it was funny, but being a teacher can sometimes remind you of the constantly annoyed cashier.

Fitz's theater posters
Man of Many Genres

Language Arts teacher and Wilsonville Broadcast Network adviser John Fitzgerald has for many years been involved in our drama club, with play posters dating back to 2009. While he is no longer as directly involved as he used to be, he is still a fan of theater and a passionate supporter of the school’s productions.

Better Not Have Any Oil

U.S. History and Civics teacher Michael Esqueda’s classroom  has a higher density of American flags than a Texas Fourth of July parade. With Americans deservedly having a negative reputation in most of the world as of late, you might think he is a jingoistic patriot, but the students’ posters show that he supports freedom and is against governments’ efforts to suppress it throughout history, with criticism of excessive money in politics and partisan gerrymandering being front and center.
