With spring coming in full force, baseball season tryouts came and went. With 40+ kids trying out and 3 potential teams, Wilsonville’s coaches have a long process to build the best teams possible.
Baseball tryouts officially started on March 2nd from 3:30-5:45. They lasted a whole week staring on Monday, which was testing day with evaluations, including hitting velocity, throwing velocity, home to first times, 1st to 3rd times, 60 yard dash, and broad jump.
The first day is always just to see where people stand compared to the rest of the players and where they can improve and get better. Tuesday is defense and situational baseball, which means that there are a lot of ground balls and fly balls to test out the players’ reaction times in difficult situations.

Also on Tuesday, there is a coach-pitch scrimmage where each player gets 3 attempts to hit the ball, and on the 3rd attempt, is where you run the bases. This is played on the varsity and junior varsity fields. This is a big day to really show how you react in a big moment.
Both Wednesday and Thursday are live scrimmage days where pitchers are now throwing to live batters to see live pitching, getting ready for the real season that is on the way. Wednesday and Thursday are the days pitchers can show off their velocity and pitching.
Pitchers have 25-30 pitches for 6 batters or more, and batters get 2-3 at-bats throughout the practice. Wednesday and Thursday are the most important days for everyone participating in tryouts because you get to show what you can do with a live pitcher or live batter, and if you can produce in a big situation.
Friday is the last day of tryouts, with just a hitting night on both the JV and Varsity fields. Every player will meet with the head coach, Rasco, and coach VavRosky to review the roster placement for the season and their status for the Spring Break trip to Southern California.
