Junior shortstop Evan Eagle looks on in Wilsonville’s win 16-1 against Parkrose on April 29th.
Compared to the success last year, this year’s team has gone through many ups and downs. Wilsonville is currently 13-7, and ranked #10 in the state. While not what Wilsonville High School baseball fans were expecting, it is still a pretty good record.
“No one said it was going to be perfect.” Senior right-handed pitcher Grady Weise states. “We knew with the pre-season we had, it wasn’t gonna be easy. Those games tested us and made us a better team.”
Wilsonville has lost to a total of 4 6A teams: Willamette (6th in the state), Lake Oswego (#10 in the state), Grant (#12 in the state), and South Salem (4th in the state), all being state title contenders in the 6A classification. The theme around this team has been “Can they finish games?”
In four of the seven losses, Wilsonville had a chance to win. In losses against Mountainview and Lake Oswego, they went into the seventh inning up and got walked off. In losses against Centennial and Grant, they just made simple mistakes that cost them the game. “We have definitely shot ourselves in the foot, multiple times.” Junior Outfielder Carson Zellick states. “We just gotta keep playing together as a team, we’re super close to breaking through. We just gotta trust each other.” Zellick adds.
With the heart of the schedule up next, their goal is to win the league and secure a top 5 seed in the playoffs. The Wildcat baseball team has had its ups and downs this season, but they are intending to end with a bang and try to finish things off on a high note.
“Right now, we’re just focusing on winning the league. We’ll worry about playoffs when we get there.” Weise states.
Wilsonville only has a total of 4 series left with Putnam, Hood River, La Salle, and Canby left before the playoffs hit.
