In early May, a disgruntled Multnomah Athletic Club ex-employee drove through the front entrance of their building in Portland, Oregon, accompanied by incendiary devices and explosives. Unnerving many in the Portland area, officials throughout downtown Portland responded to the incident with a major emergency response.
Wilsonville High School Senior Zoey Carlson responds, “That’s so scary I can’t imagine how people who live near that feel. Imagine if all those explosives went off and how many other buildings that could’ve affected.”
Another senior, Abby Khamvongsa, says, “This really shows how dangerous some mental health conditions can be to yourself and other people, it’s honestly heartbreaking.”
Oregon Public Broadcasting states that the crash occurred around 3 a.m. on May 2nd, 2026. Investigators confirm that Bruce Whitman, a 49-year-old Portland resident, was the driver, attempting to set off explosives throughout the building.
While many explosives and incendiary devices failed to be set off, the building still faced severe damage, and Whitman died in the burning vehicle after the crash. Police later revealed photos showcasing the homemade explosives and propane tanks that Whitman brought with him to the sight.
According to KPTV news, Whitman had worked at the club as a bartender years prior to this incident, and still held pent up anger towards Multnomah Athletic Club. Family members explained that while Whitman could be one of the sweetest people, he had so much hate in him – and some family believes he used Multnomah Athletic Club as his outlet.
Family members also confirmed that Whitman had struggled with serious mental health issues, including schizophrenia and bipolar disorder. Not long before this incident, Whitman had an outburst that left his family and professionals concerned about potential harm to himself or others.
Family members report being disappointed with professional health care workers for not addressing these concerns more considerately, admitting Bruce Whitman into inpatient care.
Multnomah Athletic Club is a very prominent private athletic club in Portland, with over 21,000 members – fortunately none of which were harmed during the incident as it occurred when the building was closed. Since the club is such a city staple, this event soon caught national attention.
According to Oregon Public Broadcasting, many Portland residents are left searching for answers. This attack reiterated concern for mental health crises and public safety, and how we can prevent tragedies like this in the future.
