Each year at Wilsonville High School, Mrs. Lords oversees Wilsonville’s annual art show where drawings, paintings, photographs, and sculpture are all displayed. This showing is designed to allow students, staff, and visitors to appreciate both the 2d and 3d art that students have created throughout the school year.
One thing that makes this art show unique is that every student is allowed to participate, regardless of skill level or experience. The show is an important reminder to students that every artist is on their own path working on improving their craft and that the only way to fail is to never create.
Walking through the show is an experience in itself. The PAC comes alive with a wide range of styles and mediums, giving the Wilsonville community a chance to slow down and take in what students have spent the year creating. For many, it’s a reminder of the talent that exists within the school’s walls.
One of the most unique aspects of Wilsonville’s art show is that there are no winners or competition of any kind. Every piece is treated as equally valuable, removing the pressure of judgment and letting creativity take center stage. It’s a philosophy that sets this event apart and keeps the focus on expression rather than evaluation.
Mrs. Lords, the teacher who organized and runs the art show said it best, “There are so many different types of art and different ways to do art. We have painting, we have sculptures, we have photoshop. I love it when students can appreciate the diversity of art. I want students to walk away from our show knowing anyone can enjoy some type of art.”
If you missed the art show this year, make a mental note to visit next year. It’s the kind of event that reminds you why the arts deserve a place in every school. Wilsonville students showed up to prove that creativity thrives in the halls of Wilsonville.
