30 things you can’t forget to bring to college
Kaiya Shivers, Staff Writer
Your senior year is full of exciting new choices you have to make, one of which being where you’ll go to college. Among all of this excitement, choosing a university, roommate, dorm, the packing list of what to bring to your new home is often overlooked. I wanted to find out what some recent college freshman had to say about the essential items you need to survive in college. So if you’re a senior or planning on going to a university here’s a list of 30 items you just gotta have!
Command strips/ hooks
If you don't want to be fined for the little holes tacks leave in the walls then you have to get command strips and hooks. You can use them to hang up your fairy lights, pictures, mirrors etc and the hooks are super handy for hanging up coats, hats and so on. Natalya reminded me “You need extra command strips for when they fall off”
Rug
Would you rather wake up in the morning and feel the freezing cold linoleum floor on your feet or have a soft carpet to brighten up your room and keep you cozy?
Shower caddy
Two words, communal showers. Sharing a bathroom is hard so it's best to be organized and use a shower caddy to tote your bathroom supplies back and forth.
Storage bins
When you move to your dorm, pack your stuff in storage bins so you can repack it all back in later and use the bins to organize your stuff to maximize your space, you can even stow them under your bed. Wilsonville 2020 senior, Samantha Katz shared “Luckily I don’t have to use under the bed storage because I’m in a single but if you do have a roommate you are going to need storage bins.”
Mattress topper
Sleep is one of the most important things ever and it's up to you to magically transform your rock hard dorm mattress into a comfy bed, which is easy with a mattress topper. "Without a mattress topper I wouldn’t be able to sleep,” Keegan declared.
Alexa
Alexas seriously come in handy. They can give you recipes, set alarms, display the time, play music, movies and so much more!
Printer
Owning a printer saves time and money and a lot of professors prefer printed work for assignments. Plus there are so many different prices and sizes for printers. “I use my neighbor's printer a lot for classes. There are printers on campus but if it’s late at night or i’m lazy it’s nice to print close” says Cami Saunders.
Speaker
A speaker is definitely a must have. It's so fun to listen to music when you go to the beach, on a hike or just to listen too in your dorm.
Mini fridge and freezer
Mini fridges are a dorm must have! This is a luxury that is so worth it. You don't want your roommates stealing all your favorite snacks do you? Keegan stated “My mini fridge and freezer are great especially if you don’t have a kitchen to keep foods you like.”
Keurig
I personally couldn't live without coffee so having a keurig, which spits out your favorite coffee in less than 2 minutes plus Keurigs can make tea and hot cocoa too! You really can't go wrong with having one, Tenley exclaimed “ A KEURIG!!! I just got one because caffeine addictions are spendy!”
Scissors, tape, stapler, batteries, Tide pods
SERIOUSLY don't forget these.
Portable charger
Seriously where would we be without portable chargers. These are super helpful to have in emergency situations or when you're going on a hike, camping or hanging out at someone's dorm who doesn't have an extension cord!
Extension cords
Two outlets is not gonna cut it. You seriously need at least one extension cord for all your lamps, chargers, plug-ins, fairy lights, fans and so on.
Backpack Laundry hamper
You'll most likely have to share a washer and dryer but the perfect solution to make luggin your dirty clothes back and forth easier is the backpack hamper. It saves way more space compared to a plastic hamper and it is so much easier to carry up and down staircases.
Phone wallet
A phone wallet is perfect for any college student. Having your student id, credit card, drivers license and so on connected to your phone, which you take everywhere, seriously comes in hand. It makes it easier to find everything and save room in your purse.
Makeup mirror
This is mainly for girls but I seriously can't do my makeup hair without a closeup makeup mirror.
Lap Pillow Desk
Lap Pillow Desk With a lap pillow desk you can find a comfortable spot to study literally anywhere. This invention allows you to do homework or work on your laptop more comfortably in bed or anywhere you don't have access to a desk.
Small fan
No matter where you go to college your dorm could either get super hot or loud and fans help with both making white noise to help you fall asleep and cooling down your room. So make sure to bring one, preferably small to save space! Former Wildcat senior Tenley Lubisich shared “I’m in California so my fan is my saving grace during heat waves”
Robe
You seriously need a snuggly robe for when you're trekking back to your room after your communal shower or just hanging out when it's chilly at night.
Bedshelfie
The number one thing to think about when decorating your dorm is saving space and the bed shelfie is another tool to help you do just that. The beed shelfie is an attachment table for your bed that can hold up to 15 pounds. It's a perfect place to set your cup of coffee, book or phone to charge at night without worrying about misplacing it. Former senior Keegan Shivers added “Before I had a bedshelfie my...
Shoe rack
If you have a bunch of shoes and want to stay organized you need a shoe rack, let's try to avoid having a pile of shoes in the back of your closet.
Magic Space saving hangers
Organizing your clothes with minimal space is made 100 % easier with the magic space saving hangers. You can fit so many more clothes and stay organized!
Handheld vacuum cleaner
Living in a dorm demands you to save as much space as possible, so a handheld vacuum cleaner is perfect! They're convenient, space friendly, cheap and you can use them literally anywhere, even your car. Former Wilsonville senior, Cami Saunders, shared “A mini vacuum is only like $20 at Walmart” and agreed with all my other interviewees on the importance of this item for keeping your dorm clean....
Swiffer
Dorm floors get super dirty and sometimes a broom doesn't cut it but that's why we have Swiffers. They're super cheap space friendly and the perfect mop replacement.
Toothbrush cover
In a college environment your toothbrush is a major target for contamination. From touching other people's toothbrushes to accidentally getting knocked on the floor, we should all thank God for toothbrush covers.
Water filter Pitcher
I think we all take for granted the filtered water we drink from our fridges or faucets but when you're in college you get what you get and sometimes tap water isn't the cleanest so it's such a good idea to get a water filter pitcher so you can have clean cold water on hand.
