Pink out
October 2, 2017
On this past Friday, the Wildcat football team kicked off Wilsonville High School’s “Pink Week”–an annual tradition where students wear pink at all sporting events to support breast cancer awareness. This week, all Fall sports teams have a home game where the student section will come sporting all pink, just like they did for the football game.
If you were looking to buy something pink, the student store is selling pom poms as well as glow in bracelets. Unfortunately, the student store has sold out of all of the pink shirts they ordered. The student store ordered just over 100 shirts even though the school has over 1100 students. The pink shirts sold out very quickly, and many students were disappointed.
The football team exited the tunnel in their pink out uniforms when they took the field to play Rex Putnam.
The team was greeted by an enthusiastic crowd of students covered in pink. The student section is lead by a group of senior boys and cheerleaders who have insane school spirit. The leaders of the student section use an array of cheers to get the students hyped for games including the banana chant, “Everywhere We Go,” and “We Believe.” Although the game was a blowout, the student section stayed active and loud the whole game to support their cats. The football team won the game allowing the student section full of pink to do their favorite chant–”We Believe.” This chant was different than usual because of Jacob Dominguez, Sophomore at Wilsonville, ended the chant in a backflip, igniting the student section.
Another action that Wilsonville High School does to support breast cancer awareness is having a “Stick It to Cancer” fundraiser where students from ASB walk up and down the stands with pink duct tape, and fans stick a donation on the tape that goes toward the “Breast Friends” organization–a local program where breast cancer survivors help women going through treatment to give them hope and a friend. This event will go on at all of the pink out sporting events this week, so come watch some sports and make sure to donate to a great cause!
