Wilsonville Wrestling fell to Hillsboro despite competing well. The Wildcats compete next on Wednesday, January 12th.

Wilsonville Wrestling faced Hillsboro on January 6th at Wilsonville High School. The JV team competed first at 6pm and couldn’t mount a 21 point comeback with a final score 27-6. Varsity followed shortly after at 7pm. Facing a tough Hillsboro squad, the young Wilsonville team lost 54-30.

One standout match was from senior Marshall Rodenbeck who won 36-30 over Hillsboro during his match. Due to Wilsonville being forced to forfeit many matches, they were unable to convert many points. Wilsonville walked away with five takedowns, one escape, and one reversal. Wilsonville had a 60% fall percentage (fall also known as a pin) compared to a 78% fall percentage for Hillsboro.

Senior Marshall Rodenbeck states that he believes the meet went well and as the team grows, they will improve as time goes on. “I could’ve prolonged the match to get more takedowns and practice on someone new. We also could have carried more aggression with us as a team, ” said Rodenbeck. “I believe I competed pretty well in my match” stated Rodenbeck.

Sophomore Jasmine Brown agrees with Rodenbeck’s statement about how the team needs to carry more aggression with them throughout the match. “Our team has heart. We just need to work on maintaining positive attitudes and not giving up halfway through when things don’t go our way. Brown and Rodenbeck mentioned how the whole team agreed that even though they lost, this meet was one of their best performances so far this year.

Despite a tough loss to a talented Hillsboro team, the Wildcats are continuing to learn and are ready to bounce back.
