Spring Sports are underway! I will be covering Baseball and Softball.

Last week in Wilsonville Sports, many teams went at it across different sports. They all played hard and represented Wilsonville well! Here’s this weeks recap:

The Baseball team, ranked number 2 in the preseason polls in 5A, has started out hot. They won their first game against Cleveland at home. Seniors Keenan Sanford and Matthew Gomez combined for a complete game. The offense came to life in support of the pitching, scoring 10 runs, leading to a 10-4 victory. Then, they hosted Centennial. Sophomore Justin Schramm almost threw a complete game but had some late help from Junior Will Hemsley. “Trusting my defense helped me.” Says Schramm. “I just needed to throw strikes.” Again, the offense came to life, scoring 10 runs off the Eagle’s pitching. 2-0 on the season, the Cats traveled to Tualatin for an early test. It was a back and forth offense-dominated game but the Timberwolves got the better of the Cats for an 8-7 loss for Wilsonville. 

The Softball team is good. Scary good. They have two D-1 pitchers on their staff and one of the best offensive lineups in the state as well. And they have shown why. They won their first four games of the season with no real competition. However, they did run into a little bit of trouble against the number 6 team in 6A, North Medford, losing that game 2-1. It was a good, old-fashioned pitching duel that didn’t go the Cats way. They later came back and stomped Southridge 11-3 before turning their eyes to the biggest game of the year so far, Oregon City. OC is arguably the best team in the state. They outscored opponents 88-12 coming into this game. Defense and timely hitting was the story of this one as the Cats hung on to win it 5-3. “We knew our role as individuals and supported each other.” Says Senior Maddie Erickson. “Wilsonville Softball is ready to go far.”
