After taking a two-year break, the Primary Tutor class has made its comeback. Every day during the course, the students enrolled head straight over to Boeckman Creek Primary School. The students are assigned to a teacher at the beginning of the semester and help out in their class every day.

Typically, teachers have their high school helpers follow along with the class and work with the students who need extra assistance. Tutors help with grades ranging from pre-k to fifth grade. Senior Regan Loonstyn enjoys helping out in a fifth-grade class: “It’s fun to see them be excited about learning, and all of the students are funny and nice.”

Some of the primary classes have similar routines every day. Three primary tutors help in kindergarten and the students always do centers. Centers are stations where they will explore reading and math skills while playing games with their peers.

While helping younger kids can be really rewarding, some challenges come along with the class. Penelope Burian, a senior who helps in a kindergarten class, described the hardest part for her. “The most challenging part of being a tutor is helping the kids manage their emotions and solve conflict.”

While the class is focused on helping other students learn, the high school students can also discover and understand more about themselves.
