Winter sports student sections: is it worth going to games?
High schoolers’ views on the student sections for winter sports.
As the school year continues to progress, Wilsonville winter sports teams are also working to finish out their season, and for some: make it to playoffs. Both the girls’ and boys’ basketball teams are performing well this season. Wilsonville girls’ basketball is ranked #12 in OSAA and the boys are ranked #2. Something that always brings school spirit and energy to the games is the student sections. In the fall, the football games attract many Wildcats, forming a large crowd to cheer on the team. However, since the middle of the winter season is the hardest part of the school year for many students with finals being around the corner and other priorities taking place, is it worth it to go to the games?
Many students are still able to show up to winter sports games, including Kate Giese, a senior. Giese mentioned how she has been to a few games this season. “There are definitely fewer people but the atmosphere is still very fun.” The students in the sections still lead chants and provide high-spirited games for the players. It can still be very hard to manage schoolwork and make it to games on school nights. Giese shared, “Depending on the day, it is harder to prioritize the games because I have a higher workload on different days.”
Liza Locke, a senior, also expressed her opinions on the student sections for winter sports. “I haven’t made a lot of games this year, but those that I have been to have been really fun and people bring a lot of energy to the student sections, making it enjoyable.” Student sections are a great way for people to get together with their friends and support the high school.
Basketball is not the only winter sport; our school also has a competitive swim team, snowboard team, and wrestling team. Basketball gets a lot of recognition, but it is also important that the other teams do as well. Helena Jones, a senior and member of the swim team shares, “For bigger meets like state, a bigger student section would be nice. Otherwise, there isn’t much space and it is really hot in there.”
Though academically, making it to games or other sporting events can be difficult, many athletes appreciate the support. Student sections can provide you with a break from the stress that prevails during school.
