MECHA
February 9, 2018
“Not a group, not a club, but a movement” If you have ever come across the word or an article with MECHA, you probably wouldn’t really bat an eye. You would perhaps just scroll onto the next article without even giving it a second thought. We asked participating club members, president and vice president, and also the club advisors about what MECHA is all about. MECHA stands for Movimiento Estudiantil Chicano de Aztlan and is an organization that seeks to promote chicano unity and empowerment through political actions. We asked Mr.Ryan, one of the club advisors of MECHA, about what he thinks MECHA is all about.
“MECHA is a student leadership group that is not only looking to support one another but to also help others and the community”. We also visited Ms.Meza to ask about her opinions some of the activities the club holds. She talked about how MECHA is a place to provide a safe space for the chicano culture and to spread education.”We’re trying to promote education in our Latino community” said Ms.Meza. MECHA is also politically involved with what is happening in the Latino community, MECHA has been able to spread awareness about. “I want MECHA to be a place where our students feel supported and can call it their club”
As you can see, MECHA”s advisors goal is to not only help out their students, but also the community. Speaking of goals, MECHA seeks to not only spread education throughout the latino community but to also accomplish manner more at Wilsonville High School. If you ever considered becoming a member of MECHA but are too scared to join, here are some reasons to change your mind. You can be apart of the community by helping out at the local schools nearby, you can start being more politically involved with what is happening in the U.S. today, and build relationships with the other members that could possible last for years. They also want to provide opportunities for their club members, to promote academic achievement, and to develop leadership among the students.if you have anymore questions about MECHA, go to Mr. Ryan’s room on Thursday during lunch. And if you don’t think MECHA is for you, you can help support MECHA by buying their Jarritos which are $1.50.
