Drama students attend NWOC one act competition
Walter and Katz earn awards for directing and acting
The drama department just competed at the NWOC One act Competition, taking home awards, memories and happy faces on everyone involved! The day started with the cast of “Blu,” a one act directed by sophomore Katie Walter, preparing for a long day at Rex Putnam High School.
The show was about Scotti (Abi Edwards) taking her friends Morgan (Mikaela Ochocki), Justine (Natalie Young), and Dee (Kayia Shivers) to her sister Blu’s (Samantha Katz) room. We soon learn that Blu is dead, and she had killed herself soon before the show takes place. For the next 15 minutes, the audience learns more about Blu’s colorful life — cut short after kids at school began to bully her for being different. Overall, the cast showed off their ability to perform a heartbreaking piece to convey messages like “It’s ok to ask for help” and “Watch out for those who could need support.”
Every school in attendance was asked to bring a 10 minute segment of entertainment, so sophomores Ari Lautner and Casey Young decided to bring volunteers from different schools to play the improve game “Late to Work” and quickly earned laughs from everyone! They were even asked to host another round later in the day!
Cut to the awards, where Katie won an award for student directing, and Samantha Katz earned a certificate for “Outstanding Performance.” The cast was very pleased with their performance, and can’t wait to possibly perform it again at a future Drama Club meeting, where everyone is welcome to watch and enjoy!!
