As the first school dance commences each year, most students hope to fulfill their dreams of experiencing a typical high school dance as portrayed in movies. The lights reflecting off of their fancy attire, wrangling friends to the dance floor when their favorite song turns on, and overall feeling flawless. However, these expectations are anything but flawless.
Although awkward and unfortunate outcomes are inevitable, one controllable component of dances is the outfits students decide to assemble. In the process of preparing for school dances, some students find themselves struggling to find an outfit that will be unique to them without unintentionally matching with someone else. Students are here to share their advice as to how to stand out at homecoming.
Malia Kaleikilo, a junior and a fashion enthusiast, relies mostly on “fun colors, and patterns, and styles” that aren’t usually “seen among other people.” Her dress this year is a strapless sage dress.
Kaleikilo primarily shops at Princess Polly “because they have a lot of unique options,” and the variety helps her find a dress that will likely stand out in the crowd. Kaleikilo hopes to see a diversified abundance of dresses this year.
Fast fashion is among us, and the inability to find a dress catered to a particular person is likely due to the constant reformulation of clothing. Aysha Marin, a junior, commented on the matter, advising students to avoid commonly advertised websites, as well as “go[ing] outside of your comfort zone” in an attempt to strike a conversation.
Marin additionally added that accessorizing is a crucial component in order to achieve an individualized ensemble. When a dress lacks character and appears basic, Marin believes that “if your hair, and your heels, and your makeup is bomb,” it tends to emphasize the beauty of the dress.
When it comes down to it, no outfit should be chosen with a technical approach but with a genuine admiration towards the outfit and knowing that it will complement the distinct qualities of a person.
