This year, Wilsonville has seen an increase in the number of electives offered at the school. New this year, Wilsonville offers both regular and AP music theory, taught by Karen Bohart, who also teaches choir.
Ms. Bohart has taught music theory previously at Reynolds High School and is excited to be teaching it again here at Wilsonville. “I really enjoy it,” said Ms Bohart, “I’m also talking to them about their [music] history… they’re not just learning about notation and what’s on a page.”
The regular music theory class is set up similarly to traditional classes. There’s a self-study time for students, and Ms. Bohart has divided students into levels of music knowledge so she can better help each learner.
Music theory students have said that they appreciate the levels of learning; the class structure helps students who are new to music theory and supports students who are already familiar with music.
Students also had positive words about Ms. Bohart. Junior Chase Crouch communicated that Ms. Bohart has “responded helpfully” whenever he needed help on the class work. Senior Caleb Green also supported Ms. Bohart’s teaching style, sharing that she is resourceful and “caters to student’s needs.”
However, the course load looks considerably different on the AP front. According to senior Lily Scanlan, the workload can be “stressful at times. We move quickly because we keep building on what we learn.”
When asked who to recommend the class to, both the students and Ms. Bohart were clear: AP music theory is for students with a background in music. “I would recommend this to musicians… because it’s a [tough] class and you have to know… all the basics if not more,” said senior Lily Scanlan.
Ms. Bohart had a similar take, articulating that AP music theory is most helpful to students planning to explore music after high school. If that’s the case, Ms. Bohart said, “AP music theory is only going to help you.”
Even without extensive music knowledge, there’s a place for students who just want to know more about music! Caleb Green went on to say that “even… if you just want to genuinely enjoy music more… [music theory] is so helpful.”
While the regular music theory class covers music basics such as learning how to read music and foundational dictation practice, the AP curriculum is foundations-based; students will cover subjects like voice patterns, intervals, and triads, all requiring proficiency in the basics of music theory.
Music theory is distinct from other electives offered at Wilsonville. While the AP course is recommended for students with a background in music, the regular music theory class can serve as a path for students interested in foundational music theory.
