Mason Seal logged into Wilsonville High School’s Zoom Program in 2020 with big aspirations, paired with uncertainty about how his career would shape up. Seal played his first high school season with flowers blooming and days getting warmer as the pandemic postponed the football season for several months.
Mason Seal threw his cleats on just a couple of weeks before his first game in over a year. The pandemic had no respect for Oregon football in terms of preparation. Not to mention, this was his first high school game.
“It was exciting to get back on the field again. I remember being really nervous, wanting to do well in front of Coach Humphreys,” Seal explained.
After an undefeated JV season, unsurprisingly, Seal was called up to the big leagues for the varsity football team’s sixth and final game of Seal’s freshman season. While Seal didn’t get much action, what was to come would be spectacular.
Seal started his sophomore year with the varsity team yet again, this time not on the sidelines but on the starting offensive line. As a sophomore, this task is not a familiar one, with most sophomores not even sniffing varsity rosters.
“I was really, really nervous and didn’t want to mess up my assignment for the upperclassmen,” Seal said.
Impressively, this 2021-2022 team was a semi-finalist squad that finished 11-1. With valuable experience on Seal’s belt after the conclusion of his sophomore season, the stud looked forward to his junior year.
After working countless hours in the gym getting ready for his junior year, the time had finally come. Seal this year was handed the reigns, leading a brand new line on offense. As if this task wasn’t enough, Seal this year would also be a member of the defensive line as well.
Seal, facing perseverance, prevailed. This team would surpass the 2021-2022 team and make it to the State Championship. Wilsonville suffered a heart-wrenching 35-28 loss after giving up a two-score lead in the first half.
Fast forward 11 months, Seal is set up to avenge last year’s tragic championship loss. Wilsonville is sitting #1 in the 5A postseason football bracket. Will senior Mason Seal and the Cats build on the last two years’ progress?
“I would lose my fingers to win a state championship. It would be the best feeling in my entire life to win the state championship this year,” Seal explains.
With all-league and all-state awards coming out shortly, expect Mason Seal to headline each of the honorary lists.
After the uncertainty early on in his career, his story is simply amazing. Seal will be known for his lasting impact on Wilsonville High School and its football program in years to come.
