A sport not usually highlighted by the media or contemporary broadcast networks. A community, prevalent in Wilsonville High School, and filled with people sharing the common love and interest in disc golf.
Invented in the early 1960’s by students attending Rice University, Disc Golf quickly grew from a dorm room game to pastime and then into a global game played by children and adults to have a fun day out on the course.
For a specific student at Wilsonville High School, disc golf is the future. Myles Hooley, a junior at Wilsonville High School has been making waves across the Oregon disc golf landscape with his numerous sponsorships and national tournament invites.
In Hooley’s words: “Junior Nationals was a big step toward my competitive career. It gave me a lot of new challenges especially with people from all over the country, while also being the only person from the Pacific Northwest.”
To accompany Hooley’s success in tournaments across the country, Myles has racked up two new sponsorships for his 2024 campaign. Hooley has signed with Disc Golf Depot out of Portland. Disc Golf Depot prides itself on being the largest Disc Golf equipment store in the Pacific Northwest, and a great team ready for great competition.
Hooley grew up around disc golf, starting at nine years old when his dad brought home a disc golf kit. They headed to the Willamette Mission State Park to throw a couple of holes. Nevertheless, things started to get serious for Myles when he moved to Wilsonville.
“When I moved here to Wilsonville one of my neighbors, I saw him throwing discs out in the neighborhood, and after that, I just fell in love,” said Hooley, “My first competitive start, however, was 2020 in August at the Oregon State Finale.
One lesson we can all take from Hooley’s unique athletic success is that regardless of the popularity of the sport, everyone has their strengths and a chance at success. The story of Myles Hooley’s journey through disk golf exemplifies the power of passion and how childhood hobbies can change lives.
It just takes an open mind, determination, and a passion for any activity to result in great success. Success knows no boundaries, and every athlete deserves recognition and support, regardless of the sport they choose to pursue.
At Wilsonville, we will always celebrate the diversity of athletic talent and provide equal opportunities for all to showcase their skills, on the course, the court, or wherever their passion may lead them.
