Music is more than just lyrics and instruments; it has deeper meanings for many. To people like Camryn Morgan-Down, music, an ability to bring up spirits or comfort during harder times, “is a coping mechanism.”
Adding to that, “There are so many music types that can fit every mood and can be motivating or something you can be happy and have fun with.”
Another attribute Morgan-Down has found within music is its ability to be relatable, stating, “There are some songs that remind me of past relationships and give me nostalgia, like I Wish by Reneé Rapp.”
Opening up Spotify, Tashyka Zundel found her most recent listened-to song as “You’re Not the Only One I Know by The Sundays.” She explained, “I like it. It’s not the usual one I’d listen to, but I’m a poser, so I enjoy it.”
Zundel’s usual listening genre is rock, and she lists some of her favorites as “Gimme Brains by Bratmobile, The Empty by Le Tigre, and Horrorscope by Mommy Long Legs.”
Morgan-Down finds themselves jamming “to a lot of K-pop and either hype or sad songs, like breakup songs and stuff. Depending on my mood, and also the theater genre.”
In her childhood, Zundel was fond of “All of the Smiths, Radiohead, Mazzy Star.” She claims, “My Mom was a hippie, so we had a very Portland music taste, like 2010s Portland.”
Some of Zundel’s beloved artists are Kimya Dawson, Air, and Radiohead. However, “I do not believe that she’s doing any concerts anymore, but I would love to witness Fiona Apple in person.”
Out of her favorite artists, Zundel says that she always loves “a good Black Star by Radiohead, that’s always a great vibe.” Released in 1995 as part of Radiohead’s “The Bends” album.
While Zundel does not partake in any instruments herself, Morgan-Down plays both violin and guitar. They share, “Playing instruments makes me feel happy, it’s a really nice hobby to have, and it’s fun being involved in all sorts of things.”
Zundel leaves her last words: “I love music, I think it makes the world a better place and I think everybody should listen to music cause it’s great.”
