A student powers up their car for a drive following their obtainment of their drivers license. Driving without supervision is an exciting experience.

The reverberating beep emanating from the console creates friction between the steering wheel and a pair of sweaty palms. As nerves arise, pupils dilate, and the beating heart practically beats vindictively through its host, pressure is lifted off the brake pedal, commencing a life-altering assessment.

Driving tests are a rite of passage for many, marking a significant milestone in the journey toward independence and adulthood. Despite connotations concerning individual gain and freedom, there is less discussion of preparatory measures and what occurs in the midst of a sometimes stressful driver’s test.

Due to implementations that arose during the pandemic, student drivers are now given the option to complete their driver’s test in an alternate location to avoid the glum conditions of the DMV. Nonetheless, the test follows the same benchmarks, from curb parking to lane changing. In addition to this change, written tests have been omitted from the submission process.

On average, driver’s tests take roughly 20 minutes. In accordance with the state of Oregon’s driving preconditions, the test involves assessments on lane changing, proper signaling, turns, stops, and, most importantly, the ability to utilize all mirrors found on a car.

Although the test is relatively easy, – if effort to prepare is taken – many times, there is still a sense of anxiety when undertaking the assessment. Although this can simply mean that the student driver is eager to acquire their license, other times, it may suggest that the student driver wasn’t ready to take it.

According to a poll conducted by USA Today, “Nearly 35% of people failed a driver’s license test in the U.S between 2020 and 2023.” The most common causes of failures pertain to “insufficient observation at junctions,” as stated by Northwest Driving School.

In simpler terms, failing to meet driving standards is found most commonly in the details; students fail to demonstrate their recognition of all components of driving whether its other cars, speed limits, or merging indications, the details are crucial standards.

As student drivers from all around arrive at their drivers test, the responsibilities and exciting opportunities that a driver’s license entails further ignites one to be more successful. However, if nerves arise, it’s best to make sure that the driver is well prepared, leaving no room for anxiety.
