Cats topped by West Albany in 3-2 heartbreaker
“Our team has grown so much already since the first game against Bend. We have come together as a team and are doing a lot better defending and connecting passes. ” — co-captain Camryn Pettenger-Willey
Girls soccer once again faced a tough opponent West Albany on Tuesday, September, 4th.
The Cats were mentally and physically prepared for this game. Despite dominating the majority of the first half, an unfortunate free kick put the Cats behind one after the first forty minutes of play.
The second half seemed it was going to yield the same result after a break-away-goal put West Albany ahead by two, making the outlook of a Wildcat win doubtful. However, Teagan McNamee and Camryn Pettenger-Willey tied the game with two goals in close succession.
With the last minute on the clock taunting the Cats, West Albany gained a corner kick on a “close” call Wilsonville felt didn’t go their way.
The first corner did not connect after Wilsonville player deflected the ball out of bounds.
A second corner kick was gifted to the Bulldogs after a debatable call that the ball was caught by our keeper, Kendall Taylor, before the ball crossed the out-line.
With their third corner kick and only twelve seconds remaining in the game, West Albany scored a heart-breaking goal to top the Cats at home 3-2.
This game was a large improvement for the Cats compared previously to their first game against Bend.
I spoke to one of six captains, Camryn Pettenger-Willey post play to get her thoughts on how she though the team’s dynamic has changed since the last home game to improve their play. When asked, Camryn’s response was, “Our team has grown so much already since the first game against Bend. We have come together as a team and are doing a lot better defending and connecting passes. We have definitely started communicating a lot more and that has helped us create more opportunities on the field.”
Wilsonville is putting their loses behind them, now looking forward to the next game at Lake Oswego on Tuesday, September 11th.
