Student athletes in high school have to deal with managing school and sports and understanding the tricky balance.
“Some teachers are really understanding,” Teagan Hamilton, a sophomore at Wilsonville mentioned. She elaborates on how teachers understand the fact that sports might get in the way of schoolwork by saying, “They are also super understanding about leaving class early for games and helping me make up for the work I missed.”
Wilsonville High School has many different sports programs for students to be involved in. That gives students so many opportunities to stay active and create great memories while building community after school. All the teams have different levels that range from beginners to varsity players!
“It builds a great community,” Layla Gray says while talking about how she feels really involved with the softball program. “I have a great relationship with not only the girls on JV, but also the girls of varsity, which brought me closer to upperclassmen!”
Students might do sports as something to take their mind off of school and not have to worry. “When I’m playing volleyball, all of the stress from school is just gone for that moment,” sophomore Olivia Meaok comments while talking about how stressful school gets.
Wilsonville has sports throughout the entire year. There are fall sports, which have 8 different options. Boys and girls cross country, girls dance, football, cheerleading, boys and girls soccer, and volleyball
Winter sports also have 8 variations, which are followed by spring seasons, which have 10 different sports. This helps kids be active and get an opportunity to play sports all year long.
Doing sports during the school year might add a little more pressure on students with getting their work done and managing their time, but they gain such an amazing community and learn different experiences that can help them in future careers. For these reasons, many high schoolers play them and create memories to share beyond the months of in-season play.
