When describing the Wilsonville girls soccer program, the idea of being victorious 5A champs is not new. Recently, they have been the face of 5A soccer in Oregon. However, with their loss of many seniors this past year, do they still have all that it takes to maintain their prestige?
The program took a hit when their top scorer, Kenley Whittaker left for college, plus many other starters who greatly contributed to the program. Last year, their record was 16-2, a tough one to beat. The current record of the program is 4-4, not ideal for the soccer program.
When asked about this year so far, starting goalie Kaia Hix stated, “Our team can definitely win another state title.” When asked about how they plan on doing this, she remarks, “We need to rely on one another in the game to reach our full potential.”
Current lead scorer Camryn Schaan is excited for league play and believes that the team needs to be: “Thinking positively after coming from a rough preseason.” She believes they need to “come in and just destroy the teams in league to get that number one seed for state.”
These points are agreed by starting forward Kate Kleinke, who believes the key to success is to, “Make sure we are playing together and communicating in a positive and encouraging way.”
The girls’ soccer program is excited about their future and has communicated that they are ready to compete for the state title once again, despite this being their rebuilding year, they believe they have what it takes to continue to grow and reach their full potential.
