What was the last book you read? Not the book you had to read for your language arts class, or the textbook you had to read for your AP class, but the last time you read for pleasure.
The Atlantic released an article in which they interviewed a professor from Columbia University. This professor said that he had students coming to him telling him they were never assigned to read a book once in high school. “It’s not that they don’t want to do the reading. They don’t know how.”
However, some students at Wilsonville High School still find a lot of joy in reading. The Book Club is a great way for students to get more into reading and explore all sorts of different genres of books.
“People who enjoy reading can come together, express their opinions about books they read, show interest in different types of books,” Hayden Trodder, a member of the Book Club expresses.
For students who may only like reading horror, Book Club is reading horror books right now in honor of Halloween. For students who like fantasy, Sci-Fi, and historical fiction, there is something for everyone at Book Club.
Maybe you don’t know what you like, but you can try all sorts of different genres at Book Club. “We change the genre every single month. So we typically read a whole variety of books,” Trodder informs.
For high schoolers who maybe haven’t read a book for fun in a while, it can be intimidating to pick up a book. There are other ways to get through a book besides just reading though.
Brooklynn Rhodehamel enjoys stories but can have a hard time making time to sit down and read a book. “I prefer to listen to audiobooks over actual books because I can multitask, like listening to it while I’m driving, and I can also retain it better,” she alludes.
It can be hard to get into a good book but with so many different genres to choose from reading can be a good outlet for students who may feel stressed to get an escape.
