As the fall sports season is starting to come to an end there are many new opportunities for Wildcat student athletes in the winter There are many things to do to enjoy yourself in the Winter to stay busy from the slopes to the Basketball court to the Wrestling mats.
Snowboarding is a very popular sport for Wildcat athletes. Senior Thomas Burt explained the process of signing up and participating stating, “You can sign up at the school and club fair or you can talk to Coach Alvarez. Burt explained the prices of the fees and the season pass of being on the snowboarding team.”
Snowboarding has been a sport people are gaining interest in and getting more popular in recent years for Wilsonville athletes. Burt explained the fees by stating, “It can get pretty pricey such as the helmets, pads and board and the school fees but its worth it.”
Burt explained how to handle the school work and still being able to snowboard, establishing the grade expectations stating, “You can’t be failing any of your classes and you are responsible for making up work when we go to the slopes twice a week.”
Burt reflected upon the interest and how fun it is to snowboard with your friends and is super excited for the upcoming snowboard season and encouraged people to sign up.
Basketball has always been a big thing in Wilsonville winning back to back state championships 2 seasons ago but losing in the state championship last season failing to 3 peat. Basketball is a very competitive sport and Wilsonville runs a competitive and very good program from ‘rec’ to high school basketball.
Michael Esqueda a teacher and the freshman coach for Wilsonville high school reflected on the process of trying out and being able to play basketball in the winter stating, “The first step is you need to be registered and have all the right information then you tryout you either make a team or you get let go.”
Coach Esqueda stated the 4 teams normally have 10-11 players on each team depending on the season and tryout numbers. Esqueda reflected on last years tryout with around 60 players showing up. Esqueda echoed the competitive mentally of Wilsonville and the hard decisions to cut players.
Winter sports are always competitive and there is many different clubs sports and activities to do in the winter if you wanna be inside or outside there are many options in the winter if you want to tryout or join an activity.
