Wilsonville High School offers a variety of art classes, ranging from 2D art to 3D, and even AP. Often in the school, you’ll see a display of the most recent projects done in class. The classes don’t only work on paper but with different materials as well, allowing experimenting and exploring what you like best.
The wide variety of projects allows the students to branch out and challenge themselves. Tashyka Zundel, currently in Ms. Factors’s intermediate art class, says, “My recent favorite project has been the Squinty Squinty project we’re starting right now…it’s going to be my first big painting project and I look forward to challenging myself with something I don’t usually do.”
One of the most recent pieces is called the monoprint project, using a glass pane where the students “painted on it and printed paper on the wet paint,” says Joslin Jones, a current art student. Joslin says this piece was their favorite so far this year. (Carissa Parry)
Art classes are a nice opportunity for students to have a creative outlet during their school day, naturally artistic students, and those just trying it out all find their way of enjoying it. Art also provides a way for students to express themselves through their work.
Think of someone in your life who seems naturally gifted in art. They could draw you and it would look like a photograph. Some people are just born with this fantastic gift but still work at it often. Tashyka explains that “drawing is as normal for me as walking or anything else, it’s just something I have to work at sometimes.”
Joslin Jones says they can express themself through their artwork because “most of my pieces are centered around me and my life. I use elements from past memories as well as current events or people in my life, which blend together to represent me.”
Where do these artists find their inspiration for their work? Tashyka and Joslin explain that different media can be a form of inspiration. Joslin finds inspiration in “queer art and photography.” On the other hand, Tashyka finds inspiration from “movies and music I like, as well as looking at my friend’s artwork.”
As you’re walking down the halls of Wilsonville, stop to admire some of the artwork displayed. Maybe consider taking an art class during your time at Wilsonville.
