Imagine your parents seeing your every move throughout the day. All your shenanigans and monkey business at school are known by your parents who will expose you at dinner. For some, they have a good chance of finding their mom or dad right around the corner at school.
For students like Junior Riddick Molatore, this is his daily reality just like his sister Claudia who graduated back in 2023. Their mother is our very own Mrs. Molatore who teaches leadership classes and street law at Wilsonville High.
His mother started teaching approximately three years ago. He remembers she started working there after Covid, and she’s been growing in high school along with her son. Riddick definitely has enjoyed the benefits of a parent teaching and having her right down the hall.
He has the luxury of getting to keep the stuff he doesn’t want to carry around all day- like big posters, practice gear, and hefty textbooks- within her classroom. He also keeps stashes of food when hungry throughout the day or before football just as he would at home.
It’s not all sunshine and rainbows though, he doesn’t quite enjoy that all teachers know his mother. Riddick may be a model student, but he has no room for error or monkey business with teachers who will see his mom in the teachers’ lounge after class.
From the opposite perspective is our own very lovely lady at the front, Elda Bautista. Elda started working for the high school in 2020 after working at Boeckman Creek Primary.
When asked to compare the two schools she said it’s very different tasks and problems but no matter how old we may seem we’re all still kids deep down. She does miss the cute little kids from Boekman compared to the adults like students.
Elda is not only a superstar in our school system but is currently enrolling her third kid through Wilsonville High School. Right now, her son Abdiel is a Junior- and the youngest of the crew. She enjoys getting to work where her kids get to learn with many qualities.
She loves getting to work at the same school and being able to be there for her kids when needed. Even though Abdiel has done no wrong it keeps her kids in check knowing their mother is already at the principal’s office.
She enjoys getting to be a minute walk from her kids in case they ever need anything, like to talk, or help. Similarly to Mrs. Molatore, she holds onto bags and food for her son, especially throughout his busy soccer season
She has nothing to say about the downsides of working in the same place as her kids knowing where they are and being able to take care when needed. She enjoys getting to watch her kids as well as their friends grow and mature through their childhood.
Some people may see school as their escape from home; time to be away from their parents and family, and enjoy the freedoms of the high school building. However, there are a few downsides to having your mom or dad teaching in the classroom next to you.
