“I’ve been doing track since sixth grade. I mostly do the throwing events: shotput, discus, javelin. I’ve gotten a lot better at it over the years, cause that’s just kind of how it goes, but I also started Mr. Fink’s weight training class, which helps on strength. I think that Fink being both a weight training teacher and the coach for throwing is good. Cause if you’re in weight training, it helps your throwing quite a bit. So it’s perfect to have him doing both because he’s a really good, [fitness] teacher. [He’s] helped me improve a lot. He got my shot foot distance from like 20 feet to 30 feet in about a couple [of] months.
Music has been a majority of my high school experience because I’m in jazz band, symphonic band, pit [orchestra], and symphony [orchestra]. During freshman year, I started bassooning in January. So I’m still technically a first-year bassoonist. Being able to make it into the symphonic band was a big honor. It’s a lot of fun, a lot of cool people. My personal experience so far with bassoon [has] been good to have challenging music. It helped get me good at bassoon fast because it was, all right, I have to have this ready by so and so date. Alexandra has been very helpful when it comes to playing bassoon. She’s been super helpful; just today, I learned the alternative fingering for F#.”
