Wilsonville boys wrestling has shown strong leadership and ability on the mats and at practice during this season; through lots of adversity, they have continued their fight to state. The Wildcats are on match 9 of the season.
Coaching and staff have relied on leaders during practice and matches all season. The team equips leadership, aggressiveness, and fundamentals to meet their expectations.
Senior Charlie Middleton exclaimed the strong performance and leadership pointing out, “Our coaches expect us to be aggressive and set the tone of the fundamentals.” Middleton, a senior leader, showed his aggressiveness in his duels showcasing his many years of wrestling at Wilsonville.
The Wildcats showed passion and heart in Milwaukee sticking to the game plan and playing a smart clean game.
Sophomore James Smith Reflected on the win and the positive result repeating the goals, stating, “Our coach’s goal for us was simply to put the work in practice weeks prior and to prepare for a win we have to put in the effort in practice.”
Middleton reflected on the meet, pointing out, “I thought we looked good and aggressive this week, winning the duels and doing what we practice.”
Winning duels was a very important goal and expectation for Wilsonville, and setting goals early in the week was crucial for success.
With injuries and setbacks through past meets and matches the Wildcats showed the mentality and how important it is to win the personal battles and show what they have been taught. That comes from leadership from athletes like Charlie Middleton who was a leader of example and showed his dominance: “We want to be aggressive, our coaches echo and that’s how we got it done in the meet,” Middleton pointed out.
Smith shared the personal goals going into to meeting, factoring in the mentality of the athletes and the expectations and goals for each other. “We always go in together, and we get out together no matter what the outcome is but in this meet, we showed how strong we are and what were capable of.”
These Wildcat athletes take pride in their practices, meets, and time preparing for opponents of any level. “We take passion in what we do and it showed in the meet in Milwaukee, and we want to keep performing in duels the rest of the season!” exclaimed Middleton.
The Wildcats will look to once again get the strong win in their next meet showing the characteristics they have practiced all season from all of their leaders and coaches to continue and develop the fundamentals.
