Student photographers play an important role in school. They express emotions in their art and students can be themselves in photography.
The photos captured often demonstrate new things, giving the world perspective on various points of view. Student photographers make an impact by how they contribute to the school’s community, and how their work can make an impact on others.
For many years, Wilsonville hired different photographers to capture photos such in sporting events and for musical performances. Now that Wilsonville has multiple class options for photography, (Journalism 1, WBN, Photography), student photographers are volunteering, meaning that Wilsonville doesn’t need to hire photographers from outside of school anymore.
Wilsonville High School is very lucky to have many talented student photographers. Whether it’s for sports, nature, or any other topic, photography is an interpretive art and a visual representation for stories of the school.
There are many different reasons someone can become interested in photography. For Peighton Olson, the drive was her friends in class. Olson states, “I know a bunch of people in photography. I was lucky to get an opportunity to be in the yearbook, so I think that really helped with photography.”
Josiah Schwein shares that his family introduced him to photography. “I first became interested as a kid. My parents had a lot of photography gear around the house, so I was able to mess around with it. It’s something that I love and enjoy doing now,” Schwein says.
Sports photography plays a big role at Wilsonville High School. People like Schwein and Olson all find their photography passion within sports. Schwein adds, “I look at guys on NFL sidelines that work for ESPN or other sports broadcast companies, and I look at a lot of their stuff.”
Olson also explains, “I just like taking pictures of sports because I feel like as a soccer player, I know that it’s really fun to post on social media and be able to show the stuff you’re able to do in your sport.”
As a photographer, an angle can be everything. For Olson, working with different angles is something she tries to do a lot. Olson says, “I like to sit underneath the basketball hoop and try and capture dunks or layups.”
Wilsonville High School student photographers don’t just take photos, they tell stories through their work. Wilsonville no longer needs to search for outside photographers, because instead, its own photographers are already on campus, and every photograph taken shows how much work they put into taking just one picture.
Whether it comes to sports, senior pictures, or nature and wildlife, all of Wilsonville’s student photographers excel in their art. Wilsonville High School has many talented photographers and every year many more join the family.
