On February 25th, 2025, the girls basketball team faced a known rival, the Canby Cougars. The Cats faced growth, success, and support throughout the whole game, especially from the youth players that crowded the stands.
This game was specifically special due to the fact that it was youth night. The gym was filled with the younger generations of basketball players, and their families. The youth were loud, cheerful, and were looking up to the role models playing on the court.
It was really special for the High School girls to experience the excitement from the younger players. Junior Gabi Moultrie mentioned, “All the kids look up to us and whenever something good happens they erupt in cheers, which is a super fun environment.”
During the game, the youth spectators were engaging in cheers for the Wildcats, which was meaningful for the players during the game. It’s inspiring for the team to play knowing many future Wildcats are idolizing them.
The cheers and engagement from the youth in the stands helped the cats to be focused on the game from the very beginning. The Cats started off the game with their 5 starters including Audrey Counts, Fareeda ElManhawy, Ryme Jaekel, Gabi Moultrie, and Payton Ratcliffe.
The team carried much success throughout the game, leading 38-26 at halftime. Junior, Gabi Moultrie led the team in points at the end of the first half, having scored 15 points, two of which were 3 pointers, along with four 2-point field goals.
Senior Payton Ratcliffe led the team in points at the end of the second half, scoring five 2-point field goals, equaling a total of 10 points. The Cats carried positive energy throughout the whole game, winning the game 71-50.
The girls stayed consistent throughout the whole game, and ended the game feeling good, knowing they had conquered a known rival. This game helped them in preparation for playoffs, and continuing their winning streak.
Junior Finley Blankenship said, “Getting this win has helped us stay on path to winning league and understanding what we need to work on before entering into playoffs.”
The Cats used this game as fuel, to end their league season and go into playoffs on a high note. The team later faced La Salle Prep on March 3rd, 2025, taking the win 64-46, and getting a hold of the league title.
This league title has given them much confidence going into playoffs on March 7th, 2025. They look forward to the competition they will face, and finishing off their 2024-2025 season.
