Campaign season is upon us at Wilsonville, This comes with lots of excitement, not only from the students but also from the staff. Coming from the voices of different students with different views who want to make a long-lasting impact at Wilsonville High School.
This year, the ASB options are all very strong options that demonstrate school spirit and school pride in a competitive race, with the presidential candidates being Ryan Williams, Riddick Molarore, and Oliver Latta.
Candidates have shown pride on social media by utilizing campaign videos and putting up posters. In this day and age, the influence of social media is huge, so being able to influence many people in lots of different ways is important for candidates.
Rachael Romanyuk, a sophomore, is running for class president and class council. Romanyuk reflects on the election and the work needing to be done in stating,
“Being on the council helps you learn skills past high school, you also have a team and council you work with to make decisions, which is crucial, and you need to think to be successful to be successful, taking next steps to believe you will be successful to achieve goals.”
Students enjoy the time of year to hear students from different perspectives and unique positions, from class presidents to treasurers and new faces from platforms from posters, social media, and videos demonstrated in the life classes to share the goals and perspectives of all of the candidates.
“Each campaign is different,” Romanyuk pointed out, “but we still have the same goal to improve Wilsonville through spirit and community, making school enjoyable for everyone.”
Mrs. Heaton, a 9th and 10th grade language arts teacher here at Wilsonville, believes the elections are very important and can influence many things, though all grades, giving many different people voices and unique and important roles.
Heaton points out, “It gives students ownership in the place they want to learn, with voices in decisions through the many different roles, though asb and leadership roles, to collaborate and sway with peers, which builds many different skills for the students’ future.”
A new batch of leadership is always a great thing. It brings a sense of togetherness and stability within a community and a team. Throughout the years, the Wilsonville ASB class presidents have shown a range of ideas and spirit, representing their school’s desire to improve and make an impact not only on the school but also on the community as a whole.
Heaton reflects on the campaigns of the students and the excitement of students running and advertising stating, “It is great for students to get their messages out on many different landscapes and platforms advocating for their school, some students dont have every platform so I think it is very important to get there messages out in many different ways to keep all students engaged.”
The influence of past leaders and membership gives motivation to current students, such as
Romanyuk- to be able to believe in themselves and their peers, to be able to keep working on what past leaders have done to impact things positively.
Elections and new student running are overall really important for schools to have leaders who want to make a change and make an impact for staff and students.
