Keeping a win streak going for a long time is notoriously difficult in baseball. Whether it be hitting variance, bad pitching days, or the sheer unpredictability of the sport, baseball is arguably the toughest sport to keep a streak like this going. If you’ve seen Moneyball before, where the Oakland A’s break the AL record with 20 straight, you probably know that.
And yet these ‘Cats aren’t just on a ridiculous 24-game streak, the longest in school history; they are unbeaten throughout the year with a 24-0 record. “As a team, I think it’s still a lot of confidence and the drive of achieving the winning streak is keeping us going,” said junior pitcher Colby Kosderka.
Kosderka, a key pitcher for the Wildcats with a hot hand right now, is doing this in his first year on Varsity, and it’s been a special one. To prepare for the year, Kosderka “got in the weight room a lot, which helped me get my velocity up, and a lot of different coaches have helped with my mechanics, which has helped me have a different pitch arsenal and has been the biggest benefit towards my pitching success this year.”
The Wilsonville defense and pitching have been great this year, holding their opponent to 5 runs or less all but twice this year, vs. 6A opponents Wilamette and a tough 6A Aloha squad. And with the batting support of an offense averaging 10.5 runs per game, which has topped out at a whopping 24 runs in a single game, you can begin to see how the Wildcats keep defying the traditional unpredictability of the sport.
The Wildcats have just 3 games left before playoffs against tough opponents in La Salle, who just got done fighting Wilsonville tooth and nail to a 3-1 game and then a series with a 21-3 Canby team, with the NWOC title likely being on the line. Then it’ll be time for the playoffs, where the Wildcats will undoubtedly be seen as one of the favorites to take State.
